Revelation 2:21: The Errors of Jezebel Revisited

Verse 21:[1] And I gave her space (Rom. 2:4; Rev. 9:20) to repent of her fornication; and she repented not.

[I gave to her a time, etc.] I did not immediately take her out of this life, as she deserved, even according to the Law of Moses;[2] although she was adding sexual impurity to her evil doctrines, perhaps with the Bishop suspecting, but not clearly knowing. There is an easy movement from Prostitution to Adultery, says Dion Prusæensis[3] (Grotius).

And I gave her space to repent: I was not quick with her, but gave her a time of patience, and did not cut her off at first; but she was incorrigible, and went on in her sinful courses.

[1] Greek: καὶ ἔδωκα αὐτῇ χρόνον ἵνα μετανοήσῃ ἐκ τῆς πορνείας αὐτῆς, καὶ οὐ μετενόησεν.

[2] See Deuteronomy 13; 17; 18.

[3] Oration 7:133-152. Dion of Prusa (c. 40-c. 120) was a Greek orator and author.

Thomas Boston's The Doctrines of the Christian Religion: 'God suffers men to go on in sin and prosper, that he may render them the more inexcusable. This goodness and forbearance should lead them to repentance; and when it does not, it aggravates their sin, and makes them the more inexcusable, when he comes to reckon with them. Hence it is said of Jezebel, "I gave her space to repent of her fornication, and she repented not," Revelation 2:21. God spins out his mercies toward sinners; and if they do not repent and amend, his patience will be a witness against them, and his justice will be more cleared in their condemnation.'

William Tong (for Matthew Henry): 'These wicked seducers were compared to Jezebel, and called by her name. Jezebel was a persecutor of the prophets of the Lord, and a great patroness of idolaters and false prophets. The sin of these seducers was that they attempted to draw the servants of God into fornication, and to offer sacrifices to idols; they called themselves prophets, and so would claim a superior authority and regard to the ministers of the church. Two things aggravated the sin of these seducers, who, being one in their spirit and design, are spoken of as one person:—[1.] They made use of the name of God to oppose the truth of his doctrine and worship; this very muc…
