5. The argument of the same. It is a compendium of Christian Doctrine, bearing witness to preceding Scriptures.



Therefore, thus Saint John, being about to close the canon of Scripture with these Epistles and his Apocalypse, sets forth and repeats saving doctrine concerning God, concerning Christ’s person, natures, office, and benefits; and also explicates our duty toward God, Christ, and our neighbor, and explains the differentiating marks of the true sons of God; and at the same time, bearing witness to the preceding Scriptures as containing perfect truth and wisdom, gathers them into a summary, as it were, and in that manner fortifies against deception, especially the deception of Antichrist.

Dr. Steven Dilday holds a BA in Religion and Philosophy from Campbell University, a Master of Arts in Religion from Westminster Theological Seminary (Philadelphia), and both a Master of Divinity and a  Ph.D. in Puritan History and Literature from Whitefield Theological Seminary.  He is also the translator of Matthew Poole's Synopsis of Biblical Interpreters and Bernardinus De Moor’s Didactico-Elenctic Theology.
