Heidegger's Bible Handbook: Ephesians: Context of Writing

Writer's picture: Dr. DildayDr. Dilday

6. It was written by Saint Paul at Rome, in chains.

That this Epistle was written before Saint Paul saw the Ephesians, Athanasius already of old set forth in his Synopsi, with the Greek Scholiast following him. Theodoret more rightly asserts that this was written after they were seen and converted by him. Indeed, it was written from bonds, Ephesians 3:1; 6:20, and so at Rome, where he was in bonds. Now, that he was at Ephesus, and had preached the Gospel there, before he was led captive to Rome, the sequence of the history in Acts 19; 20 abundantly shows.
