3. The Psalms are the most elegant composition in the whole world. Their argument.

Philipp Melanchthon

Now, this work, clearly Divine, diverse, uncommonly elegant, pleasant, useful, and learned, and what Melanchthon, being in a position to judge, once marked as the most elegant Writing in the whole world, contains various songs, which were written in the ancient Church almost until the calamitous times of Antiochus, and which are, as it were, a certain Epitome of the whole Old Testament, a mirror of the grace of God, and a complete anatomy of the whole man; in which are lessons of every sort concerning God, His nature, will, and worship: concerning His gracious promises and works towards believers: concerning our faith in the promises of God, obedience, infirmities, patience, constancy, and glorious freedom in adversities: concerning our whole life towards God, and His faithfulness towards us in Christ: the most elegant Prophecies, especially concerning Christ and His Kingdom, are here found, pertaining to the consolation and confirmation of the Church.
