Verse 3:[1] The sons of (Gen. 38:3; 46:12; Num 26:19) Judah; Er, and Onan, and Shelah: which three were born unto him of the daughter of (Gen. 38:2) Shua the Canaanitess. And (Gen. 38:7) Er, the firstborn of Judah, was evil in the sight of the LORD; and he slew him.
[The sons of Judah] From Judah himself, divinely taken into the principal part of the right of primogeniture, does he begin (Malvenda out of Junius), because of the Royal succession, and the origin of the Christ from him (Malvenda out of Junius, Mariana).
He puts Judah first, because the best part of the right of the first-born, to wit, the dominion, was conferred upon him, Genesis 49:8, and because the Messiah was to come out of his loins.
[The daughter of Shua, etc.] This Shua was the father of the wife of Judah (Vatablus).
Verse 4:[2] And (Gen. 38:29, 30; Matt. 1:3) Tamar his daughter in law bare him Pharez and Zerah. All the sons of Judah were five.
Verse 5:[3] The sons of (Gen. 46:12; Ruth 4:18) Pharez; Hezron, and Hamul.
Verse 6:[4] And the sons of Zerah; Zimri (or, Zabdi, Josh. 7:1[5]), (1 Kings 4:31) and Ethan, and Heman, and Calcol, and Dara (or, Darda[6]): five of them in all.
[Also the sons of Zerah; Zimri, and Ethan, etc.] Zimri was properly the son of Zerah: now, those following were his posterity, but not immediately born of him, for they are called the sons of Mahol, 1 Kings 4:31 (Junius). Unless perhaps Mahol is Zerah himself, a man with two names (Malvenda).
And the sons of Zerah, etc.: If these be the same who are mentioned as the sons of Mahol, 1 Kings 4:31, either the same man had two names, Zerah and Mahol, as was usual among the Hebrews; or one of these was their immediate father, and the other their grandfather.
[Dara] Hebrew: דָּרַע/Dara; who is דַּרְדַּע/Darda, 1 Kings 4:31 (Malvenda).
Verse 7:[7] And the sons of (see 1 Chron 4:1) Carmi; Achar (or, Achan), the troubler of Israel, who transgressed in the thing (Josh. 6:18; 7:1) accursed.
[The sons of Carmi; Achar, etc.] Whither here are the sons of Carmi? Namely, out of Joshua 7:1, Carmi was the son of Zimri (as it is here written, but Zabdi in Joshua), the grandson of Zerah, the great-grandson of Judah (Mariana). [And so some translate it in this way:] And the sons of Zimri, Carmi; the grandson, Achar, etc. (Junius and Tremellius, Piscator). Moreover, Achan is here called Achar by allusion, or by paronomasia,[8] that is, a troubler, because he troubled the people[9] (Junius, Piscator, Mariana).
Carmi is here mentioned, because he was the son of Zimri, who is also called Zabdi, Joshua 7:1. Achar; called Achan, Joshua 7:1, and here Achar, with a little variation for greater significancy; for Achar signifies a troubler.
[And he sinned, etc., אֲשֶׁ֥ר מָעַ֖ל בַּחֵֽרֶם׃] Who transgressed, etc. (Pagnine, Montanus); when he transgressed, etc. (Tigurinus); transgressing, etc. (Munster).
Verse 8:[10] And the sons of Ethan; Azariah.
Verse 9:[11] The sons also of Hezron, that were born unto him; Jerahmeel, and Ram (or, Aram, Matt. 1:3, 4[12]), and Chelubai (or Caleb, 1 Chron. 2:18,[13] 42[14]).
[And Ram, and Chelubai] Who is Aram, Ruth 4:19;[15] Matthew 1:3; and Caleb, 1 Chronicles 2:18 (Junius, Malvenda). It is common among the Hebrews either to clip or to change some part of proper names (Tirinus).
Verse 10:[16] And Ram (Ruth 4:19, 20; Matt. 1:4) begat Amminadab; and Amminadab begat Nahshon, (Num. 1:7; 2:3) prince of the children of Judah…
[circa 1471 BC] Verse 11:[17] And Nahshon begat Salma (or, Salmon, Ruth 4:21;[18] Matt. 1:4[19]), and Salma begat Boaz…
Verse 12:[20] And Boaz begat Obed, and Obed begat Jesse…

William Jay's Morning Exercises: 'Our safety does not depend upon our knowledge, but our comfort is much affected, by it, and sometimes a servant of God has but very imperfect views of those glorious truths which make us "free indeed." [John 8:36] Sometimes he may be depressed by his bodily frame and infirmities. Sometimes, too, he is under divine rebuke for sin, for this it is that separates between God and the soul. We should therefore search and try our ways. Is there not a cause? [1 Samuel 17:29] If the consolations of God are small with us, is there no secret thing with us? Is there no worm at the root of our withering gourd? [Jonah 4:7] No Acha…
Matthew Henry: 'The family of Judah. That tribe was most praised, most increased, and most dignified, of any of the tribes, and therefore the genealogy of it is the first and largest of them all. In the account here given of the first branches of that illustrious tree, of which Christ was to be the top branch, we meet, 1. With some that were very bad. Here is Er, Judah's eldest son, that was evil in the sight of the Lord, and was cut off, in the beginning of his days, by a stroke of divine vengeance: The Lord slew him, 1 Chronicles 2:3. His next brother, Onan, was no better, and fared no better. Here is Tamar, with who…
